Rays of Light

MUNICH: Every summer I ask myself how I can look naturally tanned already time ahead before finally going to the beach in August. How do I protect my skin at the beach or in the city on a sunny day and how about make-up at the beach?

I talked to Laura Mercier, one of the best make-up artists, who has an answer to all these questions and a new perfect bronzer in her summer collection which is the “it” make-up box in my pouch this summer.

How do I have to prepare the skin, before using Matte Radiance Baked Power?

The best way to prepare skin before using MRBP are the 4 steps to the flawless face – prime the skin, apply foundation, apply concealer and finally set with powder.

If you want to use only the MRBP without foundation, then prep skin with your moisturizer and Primer Mineral.

Primer Mineral changes its formula from liquid to powder, so it is perfect for all powder products.

Can I also use Matte Radiance Baked Powder on the eyelids or brows? If yes, how do I apply it?

No, but you can use MRBP Highlight 01 under the brow bow.

Which must-haves do you recommend for summer when you are on the go?

The new crème eye liner. It is waterproof and comes in exciting colours like Cobalt, Canard or Violet.

The limited Body Bronzing Make-up instantly reveals healthy, radiant, bronzed skin

For the beach: which foundation, lipstick or eye shadow do you recommend for a beautiful, natural look?

For the beach try to look as natural as possible!

Skin: Prep your skin with your moisturizer and the Primer Radiance for a health looking skin. Use Secret Camouflage only where needed.

Eyes: With the Tightline Cake Eyeliner you’ll bring the focus on your eyes – with the Activator it’s waterproof! Eye Basic “Flax” is a great tool to brighten up your eyelid – and it’s waterproof !

Lips: Only the LM Lip balm, it leaves the lip with a shiny and glossy look. A little bit of Pink Diamond Lip Glace, for the sparkling effects.

Best Time of the Day

CANNES: The Film Festival is over and with it also some very nice lunches I have spent in the sun and also lots of rain. Lunchtime is my favorite hour of the day, especially when you can spend it at the French Riviera, in a perfect setting, your own garden, a cosy place up the hills or right at the beach. For now I prefer going to the market, buying fresh vegetables and legumes, invite a couple of friends in my garden overlooking the blue sea and enjoying a very long lunch.
If you feel like being served, try my favorite lunch places on the Côte d’Azur.

Top right to bottom left: Coming home from the market with all the good food for our lunch, photo: Bijan Khezri, Paloma beach from above in Cap Ferrat, Art from Leger at the Colombe d’Or in Saint Paul de Vence, Tetou restaurant, if you do not want to sit inside book a table at the beach restaurant and enjoy the Bouillabaisse on Wednesdays, my favorite summer dessert at the Colombe d’Or, forest strawberries with whipped cream, Café de Turin in Nice, best seafood in town, a view from the Bijou Plage in Cannes, the cooks of the Bistrot du Port, a classic, the Club 55, if you like to stay close to your yacht, have lunch at the l’Ecrin in the Porte Canto

The Bling Ring

CANNES: Today our guest Editor Mariam Schaghaghi meets one of my favorite film directors, screen writers and producers, Sofia Coppola, at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. I love all her films because they always have the most beautiful pictures.

CANNES: We’re sitting in the “Movie Stars Lounge” in the Carlton Hotel. The weather outside on the Croisette is bad, it is raining cats and dogs, the palm trees are shaken by the wind – not glamourous at all! But all the people on the Riviera swear that the weather is always bad during the Film Festival. However, I had sunnier days than this in Cannes!

Sofia’s outfit is also much more pragmatic than elegant: she wears dark trousers and a white and blue, simple linen shirt with it. Basta. No high heels, no fanciness whatsoever.

All the extravagancies Sofia Coppola has left for her four actors of “The Bling Ring”. Middle-class girls from the Valley who are fascinated with the lifestyle of Hollywood stars – and who break into the celebrities’ villas to steal luxury handbags, jewellery, clothes. The “Bling Ring” gang really existed – Sofia had read about the college students in a Vanity Fair article, “The Suspects wore Louboutins”.

Sofia, yesterday a real heist took place in Cannes: Chopard jewellery worth around 1 million dollars was robbed from a hotel. Was this some PR for your movie?
Yeah, it really sounds like that, doesn’t it? A publicity heist for our movie!

What fascinated you most when you read the Vanity Fair article?
It felt immediately like an interesting movie: a group of kids out of control. The story reveals a lot about contemporary lifestyle, and it could not have taken place ten years ago. It is so different to be a teenager nowadays. It’s hard to figure out your identity with that much information you get from the internet. It’s pop culture overload.

You had a privileged upbringing yourself. You were surrounded by affluence and were used to Hollywood luxury. How did you experience popularity? What made you not become like those kids yearning for more and more status symbols?
It was a different time. We didn’t have reality TV. There was not this emphasis on status and brands. Reality TV brought that concept up, that anybody can be famous.

Did you have some heist movies in mind when you prepared this one?
No, but I let the kids watch some classic heist movies like “The Thomas Crown Affair”, “Ocean’s Eleven”or “Bonnie and Clyde”. They should get a romantic and fun approach to heists. But I didn’t want my movie to look fun and romantic!

Is your movie also a portrait of Los Angeles society?
Those kids are obsessed with the culture based on appearances, status and fame. That was their focus. I think it’s valuable for American society, not only for L.A. The influence of tabloid stars and reality TV is all over America.

So you see a different lifestyle in Europe then? You are often going back and forth as your husband Thomas Mars is French...
I live in New York and Paris sometimes. For me, lifestyle in Europe is different. The focus is different. The emphasis on appearance is less strong. But: The Bling culture is international! And it’s growing.

You are a mother of two girls. If “Bling Culture” is something of a zeitgeist phenomenon, how do you want to protect your children from it?
I try to keep my daughters as innocent as much as I can. I control what they are exposed to. I try to be aware of what they are watching. For the Bling kids, the parents were not very involved in their education. They were hardly present.

You shot in Paris Hilton’s house. How did that work out?
Well, she was one of  the victims and offered to show us around in her house. The nightclub in her house that we are showing is real! It was interesting to see that Paris World. She likes it that way, it’s fun for her.

You are also a spokesperson for Louis Vuitton. What amount of luxury do you find justifiable and not gross?
That’s up to any person, I appreciate the side of luxury brands that make beautiful quality. I like a lot of things in moderation. In this story, it’s more the flashy side that I don’t respond to as much. But I’m no purist.

Mila’s Smoothie

NEW YORK: My last day in New York and I am on my way to the Cannes Film Festival in the South of France. One last interview with Mila and I will be ready for the beach, the soirées and my beautiful evening gown. The last days I have been enjoying the specially made smoothies which Mila created in the morning. You can  try them yourself wherever you are.

Top right to bottom left: Mila goes for dinner to Milos on 125 West 55th Street (Sixth Avenue), her daily fast lane rollerblading in Central Park, from time to time a tasty vegetable soup for dinner, Mila goes food shopping at Whole Foods, and she enjoys fresh, red berries as much as she can during the summer months

What is your favorite (healthy) restaurant in New York?

My favorite is Greek fish restaurant Milos, in Midtown. It has the freshest fish that is flown in daily from Greece, as well as the best tasting vegetables. It’s very popular among demanding Manhattan crowd for its great food, service and hip atmosphere.

Where do you go food shopping in New York?

Whole Foods Market and Fairway are the two best food markets in NYC. You can find fresh seasonal organic produce there of great variety.
Citarella has the best fish counter with incredible variety of fresh wild caught fish and seafood, as well as meat ranging from wild game to organic farm-raised. Zabar’s  is the best for cheeses and milk products.

Do you skip meals, and if so which ones and what is the benefit in your opinion?

The best meal to skip is dinner. In most traditional cultures, dinner or supper was considered a “supplemental” or “soup-like meal” – never the main meal. The main meal was typically taken in the afternoon. Skipping dinner a few nights a week is a  great weight management tool. It helps our body to detox, improves metabolism, minimizes water gain and contributes to better energy.
If your lifestyle is hectic and you don’t have time for two proper meals a day, start your day with a nutritional protein shake with added antioxidants and adaptogens, and try to have high protein lunch with healthy carbs. Dinner can be vegetable soup, or just a cup of yogurt with some berries.

How do you deal with food cravings to still keep your sugar level stabilized, are there any tricks?

Soluble fibers have been found to suppress the appetite by satiating the gut and therefore the nervous system without increasing the calories. Flax seed or chia seed, which is a high fiber, can curb or naturally suppress the appetite.

What sport do you practice when in NYC? When at the beach? While you are
very busy with your job?

If I can’t get to the gym I put on my roller blades and ride around the park for 30 minutes. The best way to start a busy day is 15 minutes of yoga stretches and breathing exercises.

Best food you would recommend for a sportive day.

Start your day with high protein breakfast such as omelet with vegetables or hard-boiled egg with sardines. Drink green smoothie with hemp powder and branched chain amino acids complex like BCAA.

Is there any food / supplement that relaxes your body after sport?

Branch chain Amino Acids such as AminoVital by Ajinomoto, or HMB Fuel and ZMA are great supplements to spare muscles from catalization, decrease lactic acids and improve overall muscle tone. Amino acid are beneficial during and after workout.

Do you have a recipe for your favorite smoothie?

My preferred smoothie is a blend of UltraClear by Metagenics with fresh berries like blueberries and strawberries, ½ teaspoon of each superfood powder – maca, acai, ashwaganda, maqui and gogi, with addition of either almond or rice milk. Blended together with few ice cubes makes it a delicious and nutritional drink, I usually have it at least once a day.

More tips from our New York nutritionist

Here are more health tips from Mila Jouravleva. I spoke to the New York-based nutritionist and asked her about superfoods and detox supplements and regimens.

What is your absolute superfood?
Hemp seed is the superfood of the future. It is considered to be one of the most nutritious food sources on the planet and nature’s richest source of complete protein. Hemp seeds contain all the essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life, with ideal balance of Omega 3 (alpha-linoleic acid) and Omega 6 essential fatty acids (gamma-linoleic acid). Hemp seeds are also an outstanding source of Omega 9 fatty acids, considered to be beautifying oil, as well as high in brain building, liver supporting lethicine, hemp seed is one of the few seeds that contain chlorophyll and are an excellent source of major and trace minerals.

Maca is a nutrition-packed root vegetable, also known as “Peryvian Ginseng”. It increases energy, stamina and endurance; enhances libido and balances hormones in men and women; regulates and supports andrenal function, endocrine system, immune system; and battles fatigue.

Ashwagandha, an exotic Indian herb, has remarkable stress-relieving properties comparable to those of powerful drugs used to treat depression and anxiety. Ashwagandha has powerful antioxidant properties that seek and destroy the free radicals that have been implicated in aging and numerous disease states.

Shilajit, a powerful anti-ageing tonic, is very rich in plant-source ‘organic’ minerals. Shilajit is astoundingly rich in nutrients, antioxidants, amino acids, and anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal phytochemicals.

Gogi berries are perhaps the most nutritionally rich berry-fruit on the planet. They are well balanced for all body types. Gogi berries benefit longevity and healthy hormones, enhance libido, serve as potent antioxidant, improve vision, boost the immune system, hydrate, support brain and neurological health and cardiovascular system.

Acai berry is the most antioxidant rich superfood; it has 30 times more anthocyanins then red wine. Its natural antioxidant properties help promote general well-being, boosts energy, stamina and mental acuity levels, and may even increase your sex drive.

Maqui berry is the other important antioxidant, beneficial in detoxification process and weight loss. In addition to a wide range of important antioxidants, Maqui berry is rich in Vitamin C and Potassium. It protects the body’s cells and helps maintain healthy levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as supporting bone and joint health.

Which supplements do you recommend for women in springtime?
Spring is the time to cleanse. Days are longer, there’s more sunlight and we don’t need so much comfort food as we did in winter. Very helpful detox regime is to incorporate green juices on a daily basis. Fresh greens such as dandelion, kale, spinach, parsley and celery can be juiced together with cucumber, green apple and ginger. Addition of UltraClear will make it a filling and nutritious shake.

The immune system usually weakens in spring, so extra Vit C and at least 2,000 IU of Vit D3 is a must. Ashwaganda is perfect adaptogen for the spring time.

Eat more foods that are pungent (spicy), bitter, astringent / light, dry, warm: such as flavorful steamed veggies, brothy soups, brown rice.
Eat less foods that are sweet, sour, salty / heavy, cold, oily: such as fried foods, ice cream, heavy dairy.

What is your favorite and most effective oil you are using in your kitchen?
Coconut and Red Palm.
