Journey of Water

NEW YORK: Tea is essentially a journey of water. And since I discovered the most elegant tea company, Bellocq, in Brooklyn I keep thinking about that phrase whenever I taste one of their delicious blends. Just reading their tea lists enlightens your memories or imagination and I keep thinking about journeys, scents, tastes and different seasons. My favorites are LE HAMMEAU, a fresh organic herbal blend evocative of a summer meadow, and MAJORELLE MINT, organic Chinese gunpowder green tea and mint with a refreshing citrus twist. I recommend visiting their tea Atelier at 37 Greenpoint Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11222 for a taste of unique teas whose ingredients are too rare for wholesale.

COPENHAGEN: January is a month which makes me think about my house, my kitchen and the year ahead. I have to sort everything out for the next months, think about where to go, what to do… etc. My thoughts are clear when I cook in my kitchen for some friends or enjoy a meal at a nice restaurant, even on my own. I look for places which are different and which give me new perspectives and I buy tons of cooking books which also make me stay at home in my kitchen.

Yesterday in Copenhagen I discovered the Cafe Charlottenborg Contemporary Art Space whose interior has been designed by the Italian designer Martino Gamper. The cafe is an art space with a kitchen focusing on Danish home cooking. The tables are by Arne Jacobsen and fit perfectly into the space.

SYDNEY: To escape the colour grey and exchange it for lots of sunlight and bright colours, plan a trip to Australia now. Get inspired by colourful interiors and great bars and restaurants which are not only a treat for your taste buds but also for your eyes. I shop a few things for my London apartment at KIITOS, Living by Design and have dinner at Sydney’s Concrete Blonde in an amazing glamorous, Pop Art-inspired interior design by Michael McCann, who used glass mosaics to show large-scale extracts of comic books.

Good Forever

STOCKHOLM: Svenskt Tenn, a traditional interior shop, has been in the same place for more than 84 years. The recent facelift is worth a trip to Stockholm to find an interesting mix of Swedish, traditional homes, patterns and design in the shop’s motto: “Happy chances philosophy”, a mix of old, new, expensive and cheap objects.

Sight Seeing

McNally Jackson, New York
Books for Cooks, London
Le 27 Rue Jacob in Paris
Kochhaus Berlin

BERLIN: When I visit a city for business or pleasure I make sure to look out for the best bookstores in town. It should be special, nothing ordinary with the typical chain bookstore character. A good bookstore has a speciality it is known for. Special topics, readings, workshops, exhibitions, cooking classes or just the most comfortable atmosphere to read a book for hours.

Here are my favorite spots when it comes to buying books:

  • GESTALTEN SPACE, Sophie-Gips-Höfe, Sophienstraße 21, 10178 Berlin, for inspiring workshops, events and exhibitions
  • OFR, 20, rue du Petit-Thouars, 75003 Paris, for tango dancing classes, yoga and cooking workshops
  • LE 27 RUE JACOB, 27, rue Jacob, 75006 Paris, to meditate with the psychologist Christophe Andre and visit readings by  Nancy Houston
  • BOOKS FOR COOKS, 4 Blenheim Crescent, London W11 1NN, to cook the most delicious dishes you just read about
  • MCNALLY JACKSON, 52 Prince Street, New York 10012, for an excellent selection of books and magazines, a stylish café and literary events

IRMA

brings good news to you.
She lives and travels around
the world, stopping wherever
she sees something interesting,
reporting on what inspires her.
She finds beauty in the
most varied places,
from fashion shows
to art exhibits, from lonely
beaches to bustling cities.

WHERE IS IRMA NOW?

MUNICH

When in Munich my
favorite store to look
for the best selection
of clothes is THERESA.
The staff is competent
and always has the
best ideas for styling
and mixing different
designers together.
